The Government College for Arts, Chandigarh, was started in 1951 as a premier institution for the fostering of active artistic talent. Spread over 10 acres in Sector 10 C, the location of the co-educational college is just behind the Government Museum and Art Gallery. It has a total student strength of 337, with a faculty strength of 23, in a wide range of 10 courses under 3 degree programmes.
Some of the facilities that the Government College for Arts provides are; the institute has a very well-equipped library that functions as a treasure house of knowledge. State-of-the-art labs for different streams help in developing the practical facets of art education. The Campus has an auditorium to conduct all the events, seminars, creating the climate of cultural ambience.

Students can enrol in various courses at Government College for Arts, Chandigarh. The college has 10 regular full-time courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In the undergraduate section, the college offers Bachelor of Fine Arts ( BFA ) Applied Art, Graphics, Sculpture, and Painting courses and admits 15 students to each of them.
In the postgraduate section, the college offers Master of Fine Arts ( MFA ) courses in Sculpture, Applied Art, Painting, and Graphics. There are also unique programmes under this in a Diploma in Fine Arts for Divyang students, as well as in the Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts for Divyang , where both programmes take in 4 students in each intake.
