The Dev Samaj College for Women (DSCW) is located in the city of Ferozepur in Punjab. This city lies near the border with Pakistan, on the banks of the river Satluj. As the name suggests, the college is meant exclusively for the education of women. The college is named after Shri Bhagwan Dev Atma, who was a spiritual and religious guru. The DSCW is affiliated to the Panjab University in Chandigarh.
This affiliation, ensures approval with the UGC (University Grants Commission). In addition, the DSCW has also been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. An AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) gets generated to quantify the results.
The campus is spread over 25 acres of land. Courses are available here at both the UG as well as PG levels, from across the three streams of Arts, Commerce and the Sciences. At the undergrad level, for commerce, there is the B. Com (Honours) course. Likewise, there is the B. A. (Honours) for the arts students. Arts students also have the option of the B. A. Pass. A BSc.
degree is available in three areas of Computer Science, Medical and for Non- Medical. The BSc. Medical is primarily made up of the PCB specialization involving the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, while in the BSc. Non- Medical, Mathematics replaced Biology to make it a PCM combo. In addition to these, there also exists the option of a professional course of BCA.
At the master’s level, for commerce, there is the M. Com. For the sciences, options for an MSc. exist for the courses of- Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Cosmetology and in Information Technology (IT). An MA may be pursued for the social science areas of- English, History, Punjabi, Hindi and Economics. A Post Graduate Diploma may also be undertaken here for the area of Computer Applications.
This is mainly targeted at working professionals. Vocational training is also given much importance here as part of the government’s skill development mission. Thus, B. Voc. programmes are on offer here, for the areas of- Software Development, Textile & Fashion Technology, Hospital Administration & Management and one for Global Professionals in Beauty Aesthetics.
Some add- on courses may also be pursued, here at the Dev Samaj College for Women in Ferozepur. These courses may be undertaken by enrolled students in addition to their main course of study, or even by external ones. These are all career- oriented practical courses.
Options available at the DSCW are for- Cosmetology, Journalism, Child Care, Fashion Designing, Fine Arts, Food Preservation, Communicative English, Insurance Business, Yoga & Mental Health, Computer- based Accounting, Punjabi Language & Culture, Multimedia & Web- Designing, Cosmetology & Beauty Care and in Interior Designing & Decoration. The DSCW also runs a Community College programme.
The idea behind this is to connect with the community at large. The options available under this scheme are for Beauty & Wellness and in Fashion Design & Clothing Construction. The entire academics at the DSCW is managed by a cohort of four major departments, each possessing expertise in its own area. Two of these departments, even have faculty areas constituent to them.
These departments are for – Basic Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, Information Technology and for Commerce. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is further divided into the faculty areas of- English, Economics, Hindi, History, Music, Physical Education, Mathematics and in Cosmetology & Health Care.
The one on Basic Sciences meanwhile, is further divided into the areas for- Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Research plays an important role in the development of students, here at the DSCW. That is the reason for the presence of so many journals, published on campus.
These journals are named as- Phrenic, The Creative Path, Journal of Computational Science & Technology and the Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Philosophy. The campus has much to offer. There are hostel facilities for girls. Banking facilities with ATM are available in the campus’s vicinity. There is a sports field where outdoor sports may be played. Facilities are also there for indoor sports.
