Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath was established in 1967. The Institute was conceived as an educational haven for the Tibetan youth in exile and the students from the Himalayan region, CIHTS has today been recognized as one of the best institutes of Buddhism and Indo-Tibetan Studies. The college offers various courses at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.

The courses offered by the CIHTS Sarnath are BA BEd , BFA, BAMS , BA, B. Ed, MA , MPhil and PhD programmes. Admissions into BAMS are given based on the valid NEET scores. BFA, BA BEd, and BEd admissions are given based on the entrance exam scores. BA admissions are given based on the merit of the last qualifying examination. MPhil and PhD admissions are done based on the merit of the entrance exam scores.
